Robert and Clara Schumann's diaries, written during the year 1845, bare witness of Robert's fascination with contrapuntal structures and his idea to compose etudes for a curious instrument -the „pedal piano“.
This instrument - a grand piano, to which pedals, similar to those of the organ, were attached at the bottom - was already used by Mozart in his Piano Concerto in D minor, KV 466. During Schumann´s time, the construction was further developed and perfected, to enable the performance of organ works on the piano. On 24 April 1845, the Schumanns received a „pedalpiano“ which they have hired from Otto Kade. On 7 June 1845, Schumann completed the last of the six canons, which were subsequently published that year as „Etudes for pedal piano“ or „Pieces in canonic form“, Op.56.
In these Etudes, Schumann not only explored the tonal-, but also the contrapuntal abilities of the instrument. Apart from these Etudes, Schumann also composed the „Six Fugues“, Op.60 on the name BACH, for the pedal piano.
Since he knew that barely anyone will own this rare pedal device, he conceptualized alternativeparts for piano, with three- or four hands. Other composers were also inspired by these six pieces, which resulted in various transcriptions: Claude Debussy later transcribed the pieces for two pianos and various transcriptions for piano trio, were published.
These arrangements for cello and organ, were made by the cellist, Anzél Gerber and organist, Herman Jordaan.
